I have primarily used Vuescan to scan the medium format negatives I have. Nikonscan comes with the scanner and Vuescan professional it not very expensive. Both programs have strong and weak points. That said, I think the auto cropping feature in Vuescan works quite well. Vuescan does have curves adjustments, but not as adjustable and straightforward as those in Nikonscan.
